"What on earth is happening with the NHL right now?" asked former NHL enforcer John Scott (left) when discussing the Tom Wilson (right) situation.

Tom Wilson avoided suspension after an ugly brawl that saw the Washington Capitals forward attack three New York Rangers players.

Wilson crosschecked a defenseless Pavel Buchnevich in the back of the head before slamming a helmetless Artemi Panarin to the ice and punching him in the face. He was assessed a double-minor for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct by the referees, then flexed in the penalty box with his jersey off, and was able to remain in the game

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced Tuesday that Wilson has been fined $5,000 (U.S.), the maximum allowable under the CBA, for roughing Buchnevich.

Panarin, the Rangers superstar winger, left the game after the second period and will be out for the remainder of the season following the incident.

Wilson has been suspended five times in his NHL career, including a seven-game suspension this season for boarding Boston Bruins defenceman Brandon Carlo.

Much of the hockey community was outraged after it was announced Wilson, a repeat offender, would not receive a suspension following Monday’s incident.
