England v West Indies: Ben Stokes to be captain for first Test with Joe Root absent

Ben Stokes will captain England for the first time subsequent week after it was confirmed Joe Root will miss the first Test in opposition to West Indies to attend the delivery of his second little one.

Root, 29, will go away England’s coaching camp in Southampton on Wednesday, with the delivery anticipated later this week.

With the sequence being held in a bio-secure setting, Root could have to self-isolate for every week after leaving hospital earlier than re-joining the squad.

The first Test begins on 8 July.
